I had the pleasure of working with Niamh & Tommy for their recent wedding in the Salthill Hotel.
Wedding Morning in Annaghdown Co Galway
Niamh’s preparations took place in her parents home in Annaghdown, not too far from me. Niamh called to me for a chat the week before the wedding and we got on very well. A relaxed lady and the banter went back and forth very easily…all omens were good for the wedding.
Natalie O’Brien and Sandra Gillen were looking after hair and make up respectively and also two ladies that I love crossing paths with. They were set up in a pretty cool room in Niamh’s home…a room that included a lot of toys that I would have been familiar with when I was growing up. One of the coolest things that I spotted was “Bosco’s Box”….I’m giving my age away by stating same but I got a huge kick out of seeing it nonetheless. Niamh’s mum Bridie was quite proud of her vintage toy collection and rightly so.
Bridesmaids Mary, Catriona and Una were just as approachable as Niamh on wedding morning and they created a nice atmosphere to start the day off perfectly. John Murphy of Avalon Video and I were pretty happy heading off to the church with the mornings footage that we captured.
John and I made the extremely short journey to Annaghdown Church. I like working there, not least of all because of Fr Ollie and how approachable he is to work with. It was an added bonus to see the super Ailbhe Hession accompanied by James Richardson on guitar…a truly awesome duo!
Tommy was in good spirits too along with his groomsmen Johnny, Patrick and Dara, and were being kept in line by Pageboys Seán and Ciarán. We ran off some shots before the punctual Niamh arrived. Fair play to Fr Ollie, he didn’t delay too long with the ceremony. He was fun and witty like he always is and as a result of the ceremony being over promptly, it allowed Niamh and Tom a very quick stop off on Annaghdown Pier for a 2 minute photo shoot. This was something that was important to Niamh, an area where she would have spent quite a lot of time during her childhood, and indeed it was the only place that she had requested for photos. She was also conscious however of the exceptionally strong “Bonfire” tradition that exists in Annaghdown and Corrandulla and didn’t want to delay matters by taking too many photos immediately after the ceremony and delaying those that created the dozens of fires along the Annaghdown/Corrandulla route back to Salthill.
Memorial Gardens Salthill
Declan from Costolloe’s wedding Cars in Corofin drove Niamh and Tom through the bonfire territory and got them out to the Memorial Gardens in Salthill in good time. These gardens are a wonderful spot for wedding photography…in particular when they are in full bloom during the summer. We did our photos shoot here with the bridal party before allowing the bridesmaids and groomsmen back into the hotel before Niamh and Tom took a brief stroll on the Salthill Prom and grabbed the last couples of photos before heading back to their wedding reception.
The Salthill Hotel
Our final port of call was the Salthill Hotel, a busy wedding venue. Niamh and Tommy were able to relax and enjoy some down time with their family and friends before the bell was rung for the meal. Some brilliant entertainment after the meal was provided by Aidan Tierney. It was my first time witnessing him doing his routine and I found him excellent and had the crowd in stitches.
We grabbed some more photos with Niamh and Tommys friends, work colleagues, team mates before one of Galway’s best wedding bands The Weightless Astronauts. John Colohan and his band are well established and had the dance floor hopping for the remainder of the night. I’d imagine from a bands point of view, it was one of the best crowds that you could wish for at a wedding. I enjoyed the craic immensely, and there was great energy from all of the wedding guests when we were taking casual group shots. Niamh and Tommy were class people to be around, a bundle of positive energy and I think this emanated onto their guests!!
Thanks so much guys for trusting me with your wedding photography. I had an extremely enjoyable day and thoroughly enjoyed your company as well as that of your families and friends.
If Carlsberg did weddings…..well they’d be looking at yours as a starting template!
